The 50 minute walk down Abbeydale Road from my house to the centre of Sheffield takes one from tidy semi-detached houses and tree-lined avenues to the gritty end of London Road, and it gives a snapshot of a modern English city on the way: a mosque sits opposite a several hundred year old church; Halal butchers sit next to antique dealers; and pint swilling beer lads peer at burqa clad women in the street.
