The true test for our rebuilt transmisson (see previous post) came as we made the 1600 metre climb from the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez into the highlands surrounding San Cristobal de Las Casas. San Cristobal (founded 1528) is regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in Mexico – flavoured with its Spanish colonial style it has a very European feel to it with narrow cobbled streets, plazas and catholic cathedrals.
We hung out in a campground on the fringe of town for three days – doing a couple of mountain bike rides and checking out the town and surrounding Indian villages.
